Stop Forest Fires and Illegal Hunting and Poaching!

Taiwan’s dry season is a favorite time for hiking and outdoor activities, but as Yushan National Park Headquarters notes it is also a period of increased risk of forest fires. According to data from the Central Weather Bureau in mid to high-elevation areas the number of days and amount of rainfall fall below annual averages between November and March. Withered leaves and branches collect, raising the risk of a disastrous forest fire that could destroy the fragile ecology of Yushan National Park . Thus, Yushan National Park Headquarters reminds all visitors to take necessary precautions to prevent forest fires. In addition, during the winter season, Yushan National Park Headquarters will increase patrols of park areas in an effort to stop illegal hunting and poaching and encourages visitors to report any illegal activity.

Yushan National Park Headquarters is holding forest fire prevention and illegal hunting and poaching awareness activities from December 10, 2006 to April 30, 2007. Fire prevention information panels have been placed at all hiking trail entrances. In popular scenic and recreation areas, Formosan black bear and Formosan rock monkey mascots interact with visitors, reminding them to be careful to protect the forests, wildlife and themselves from the dangers of fire. During this period, visitors to the park can receive special promotional items such as souvenir key chains and rulers.
In addition to providing accurate information about how to prevent forest fires, visitors will learn how to properly respond to a forest fire to contain its spread and to ensure their safety. This includes immediately calling 119 to contact emergency and fire services. In addition, Yushan National Park encourages all visitors to report any suspicious activity, illegal hunting, poaching or abuse of wildlife to Yushan National Park Headquarters, and if possible to obtain photographic or videotaped evidence of the crime. Those causing harm or death to wildlife will be prosecuted under current conservation laws. It is essential that all illegal hunting and poaching be stopped to protect wildlife, maintain biodiversity and preserve the ecological balance.
