Removal of Indonesian wooden boat “Anak Nusantara” done without damage to the environment

In July 2006, the Indonesian wooden boat “Anak Nusantara” was stranded on the rocks in the waters of Er-Luan-Bi in Kenting National Park. It ran aground after sustaining damages from typhoon Kaimi as it passed north of Er-Luan-Bi on the way to Hong Kong. To prevent the wreck from harming the natural environment, the Kenting National Park Headquarters hauled the wreck by building wooden tracks on the beach to minimize damage to the sand. It took over a month to complete this work and now the wreck has been entirely removed.

Besides the Amorgos incident in Kenting, other accidents involving ships that had an impact on the environment, include that of the “SAMHO BROTHER”, which had chemicals on board, the “DEWIBUNYU” that spilled banana oil and recently the “Tzini” incident in Yilan. These accidents damaged local marine resources, costing much money and resources to repair. This is why marine resources conservation and sustainable management and pollution prevention have become important tasks for park managers. Kenting National Park is a marine area and coral reef ecology. the Kenting National Park Headquarters officials have said that they will spare no effort in preserving marine resources and implementing policies for marine conservation.
