Taroko National Park Headquarters Offers Secret for Snow Appreciation

Whenever the north eastern monsoon visits Taiwan during winter, as long as there is enough humidity, water droplets will crystallize into snowflakes at cooler, high elevation mountainous areas. High-elevation mountains will gradually change into their white winter costume. Most prominent of all will is Mt. Hehuan it intercepts the two streams of cold and humid air blowing upward from Liwu River and Lanyang River. As a result, during the snow season, masses of people will journey to appreciate a rare glimpse of snow.

The Taroko National Park Headquarters has a number of advisories for the general public:

  1. Be informed: one can surf on the websites of Taroko National Park Headquarters, Hualien County Administration, and Nantou County Administration to learn about the relevant snow and other climatic conditions. Also review transportation information to Hehuan Mountain.
  2. Attend especially to the following road sections that tend to freeze most easily: the Provincial Highway No. 8 (Central Crossing-Island Highway) 106 K to 112 K; 39K, 37K, 34.5K (Kenanguan) to 29.4K (Kuanyang) section of Provincial Highway No. 14 A,
  3. Since the water supply at Mt.Hehuan is not stable, and it freezes easily in winter, try to use the washroom at Dayuling (eastern entrance) or Cuifong or Yuanfong (western entrance) before you go up the mountain.
  4. Though there are trash bins in Mt. Hohuan , it is quite difficult to transport and clear up trash in wintertime. Bring your own trash down to the hill. Mt. Hehuan Service Station Contact Phone: 04-2599-1195
