Taroko Tribal Concert Held on July 28

Putanaya, an ancestor of the Taroko tribe, after his death became a beautiful rainbow, watching over his people from above, according to an old legend long circulating in the Taroko tribe.  The rainbow, therefore, has since then become an auspicious symbol for the Taroko tribe because they believe that they will be following the rainbow to where their ancestors are after their death.

The Taroko Tribal Concert was held from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, outside the visitor center. The Shui-Yuan Village Dance Group transformed the legend about the tribe’s belief into a beautiful dance. The public experienced the Taroko people’s respect for their ancestors through their dance.

Since April this year, the Taroko National Park has organized three concerts. Each concert attracted a big audience. The visitors appreciated the performances very much. This time the organizer invited the Shui-Yuan Village Dance Group, the Jiwang Church Chorus, and the Tongli Village Gorge Chorus to present the Taroko culture through music, dance and traditional music instruments. The Taroko National Park Headquarters hoped to guide the public to understand better the traditional life and culture of the Taroko tribe while helping promote the Taroko tribe community culture industries and pass on the traditional cultures.  One of the activities that also took place at this time was the “Creative Culture Fair,“ which was held between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on the same day.  The fair featured different Taroko community workshops selling their hand-woven textile works, rattan basket weaving handcrafts…all showing unique cultural and creative features of the handcrafts.

According to Lin Yung-fa, the director of the Taroko National Park Headquarters, these activities hopefully enabled the public to acquire a better understanding of the Taroko culture. The Taroko tribe community culture industries were actively promoted this way.

Moreover, the Taroko tribe must face the problem of passing on their culture.  The Taroko National Park Headquarters has for years been encouraging and funding the communities to urge young people to learn the traditional skills and through various activities has given the community workshops more opportunities to show their talents. Everyone will always be welcome to experience such feast for the eyes and ears.
