The Fongchueisha Experience Tour Organized by Kenting National Park Headquarters Water
To help the public understand the Eolian landforms at Fongchueisha, a place on Hengchun Peninsula, the Kenting National Park Headquarters will organize Conversation Between Wind and Water -- The Fongchueisha Experience Tour on the morning of Nov. 18, 2007. Registration begins immediately with 40 places available for reservation.
Fongchueisha is located between the Eluanbi Recreation Area on the east coast and Jialeshuei Recreation Area, and it's about 7 km away from Eluanbi. Surrounded by areas made of coral reef, this is the only place in the park where the ground is composed of a mixture of clay and sand, which has been formed by erosion from the rain and wind. In the rainy season during summer, the water gathers in the basin and flushes sand into the ocean; the flow of the sand forms a "sand river." The white sand slides off the edge of the plateau and forms a 70-meter high "sandfall”. In winter, the northeastern wind blows the sand up the slope of the cliff to the top. These opposing forces have caused this special landform.
The total length of the sand dunes in this area is 1,500 m and the width is about 200 m. The sand dunes are divided into two groups that run northeast to southwest in belt shapes along the basin all way to the plateau behind Chuanfan Rock.
Because of the development of National Highway 26 (Jiaer) and the planting of ironwood by the Forestry Bureau to block the movement of the sand, vines have been covering up most of the area and the old majestic Gobi desert-like scenery is fast disappearing.
The Park Headquarters would like you to experience this change in nature and the last of this unique scene at Fongchueisha, so please register as soon as possible.
To register, go to http://www.ktnp.gov.tw and register online. After registration, please report to the Visitor's Center at 9 am on the day of the activity. Also, please provide your own transportation as none will be provided by the Park. In the event of a typhoon or other bad weather like torrential rain, the activity will be cancelled.
