From caring for the maternal love of a Formosan macaque to loving nature
From caring for the maternal love of a Formosan macaque to loving nature
Since its establishment 23 years ago,Yushan National Park Headquarters has been committed to ecological education, protection and promotion, aiming to raise people’s ecological conservation consciousness by providing opportunities to experience nature. Many areas of the park are now paradises for wild animals. In recent years, the Shihshan area (石山地區) near Tataka (塔塔加) on the New Central Cross-Island Highway (新中橫公路) has been a popular spot for watching Formosan macaques(Macaca cyclopis) (台灣獼猴). On March 28, a park volunteer filmed a female macaque holding its dead newborn baby. The mother couldn’t bear to abandon her offspring, which had died for an unknown reason, and she hugged and carried the baby in her mouth for 12 days. The footage was shown in the media, arousing the concern of and moving many people. This macaque story should make people reconsider the value of the lives of wild animals and reflect on the meaning of ecological ethics.
