After being closed for four years, renowned “peculiar peak” Mt. Dabajian will be opened again

Wufeng rural township, Hsinchu County,( 新竹縣五峰鄉) was damaged severely by Typhoon Aili (艾莉颱風) in August, 2008. The Tuchang (土場) Mountain Entry Inspection station was buried by a landslide and the Dalu forest road (大鹿林道) was blocked or damaged in many places. Shei-pa National Park’s Guanwu Recreation Area was closed, leaving Mt. Dabajian, known as the most peculiar peak in Taiwan, cut off from the world.

After three years of effort by the Hsinchu Forest District Management Office, Dalu main forest road is now open to traffic along its entire length and Guanwu Recreational Area was re-opened on January 1, 2008. After taking up his post, Shei-pa National Park Director Lin Cing instructed that every effort be made to clear fallen rocks and repair places where the road foundations had collapsed along approximately 20 km of the Dalu east forest road. Basic work was completed in February. To open up the mountain to climbers again at an early date, on May 15, Director Lin Cing invited Hsinchu and Dongshi forest district management offices, Taiwan’s three national mountain climbing organizations and Shei-pa National Park Police to a meeting to discuss opening the mountain to climbers once again. The meeting decoded to officially re-open the mountain from September 23. Before Hsinchu Forest District Management Office repairs Jioujiou cabin (九九山莊) and Jhongba cabin (中霸避難山屋), the number of people allowed to enter the mountain will be limited to 150 a day. Rectification work continues along Dalu east forest road and warning signs have been placed. An on-line mountain entry permit application service has also been established. After fours years, majestic Mt. Dabajian is set to fill people with awe once again.
