Kending National Park develops interesting and fun environmental education teaching materials
To lay down the roots of environmental education, Kending National Park HQ has developed new environmental education teaching materials. These have been used for demonstration teaching in primary schools throughout Pingdong County. As a result of cooperation with Pingdong County’s Department of Education, primary schools in Pingdng County can now choose whether or not to include the course in their curriculum. In the future, it is planned that primary schools throughout Taiwan will use the textbook, strengthening student understanding of the importance of national parks and transforming this into conservation action. On the afternoon of May 19, 2008, park Director Shih Jin-fang made a personal visit to Ciaode Primary School to observe the “Migration of the Gray-faced Buzzard Hawk (Butastur indicus 灰面鵟鷹)” teaching material being used by Grade 3 Class 1 students. Pingdong County primary school principals were also invited to observe and then a discussion was held.
Ecological conservation is one of Kending National Park HQ’s main work focuses every year. The best way for conservation concepts to take root is by educating local children. Park Director Shih Jin-fang said that, from a long-term perspective, building the concept of the value of conservation through education is the best way to achieve the objective of ecological conservation.
