Shadao Shell Sand Exhibition Hall reopens
Shadao Shell Sand Exhibition Hall reopens
Shaodao Beach is located on the Hengchun Peninsula at the 39 kilometer point of the Ping-Ou Highway. It is Taiwan’s only shell beach. Bays are where the power of the sea is reduced and the beach was formed by the accumulation of fine sand produced by the erosion of shells and coral by the sea. Shell fragments, coral fossil and Foraminifera fossil fragments account for about 98% of the beach, which is known as “Shell Beach” and renowned in Taiwan and overseas.
To allow service quality to be improved, the exhibition hall was closed in December 2007 for renovation. After 10 months of renovation work, the hall opened again on September 11 2008. The hall’s interior facilities and equipment have been improved. A new exhibit compares the make-up of grains of sand found in the park and introduces the precious coral, shellfish and Foraminifera in the sand of Shadao Beach. Microscopes are provided to allow the Foraminifera in the sand grains to be viewed.
