Kenting National Park HQ’s 2008

Kenting National Park HQ’s 2008 “migratory bird protection” work plan

Since it was established in 1983, migratory bird protection has been an important part of conservation work in the park. In the last 20 years the trapping of birds for food on the Hengchun Peninsula has been reduced substantially.

Kenting National Park is an important stopover point for migratory birds from northeast Asia and a large number of various different species of bird stop-off in Taiwan every autumn, with the  Gray-faced Buzzard Eagle(灰面鵟鷹)andBrown Shrike(紅尾伯勞) the best known. Brown shrikes and hawks begin arriving in Taiwan at the end of August, however, September to October is the peak time for arrivals. The annual migration of tens of thousands of birds, mainly Chinese sparrow hawks (赤腹鷹)and gray-faced buzzard eagles, is now almost at an end for this year. This world-class natural sight is the highlight of Pingdong Hawk Migration Festival

The park HQ said that 2008’s migratory bird protection work plan, including environmental education, has been proved fruitful. In the future, the promotion of different kinds of nature conservation work will continue to protect precious natural resources and leave a healthy environment for future generations.
