Kenting National Park launches a White popinac rectification battle plan

For the last two years Kenting National Park has carried out White popinac (Leucaena leucocephala 銀合歡) rectification work. Up to the present time, in cooperation with Taiwan Forestry Research Institute and Pingdong University of Technology, 46 hectares of White popinac have been cleared in the park and, using natural substitution and artificial forestation methods, habitat restoration has been carried out to restore the original coastal forest scenery. Groups of White popinac trees can no longer be seen from Chencheng Rural Township’s Houwan village all the way to the coast at Wanlitong in Hengchun Township.

White popinac is the most widespread of alien invasive species on the Hengchun Peninsula and the national park has not escaped, with several thousand hectares of land affected. White popinac rectification work is intended to restore the natural ecological environment and provide a habitat for diverse native species, and also establish a national model for nature conservation work combining the efforts of government bodies, research bodies, local people and welfare organizations.
