New use for an important part of Taiwan’s agricultural history:“Zhuzihu Penglai Rice Foundation Seed Field Office”
Zhuzihu is situated at the center of Yangmingshan National Park. It was settled by Han Chinese several hundred years ago and, in the Japanese era, was used as place to carry out rice growing experiments because of its special terrain and ideal climate, Penglai foundation seed fields being established in 1923. For this reason it became known later as the birthplace of Penglai rice. The Zhuzihu Penglai Rice Foundation Seed Field Office was established in 1928. It has been designated a historic building and is an important part of Taiwan’s agricultural history.
For many years it has been the hope of people in various circles that the building be used as a cultural and historical exhibition space, showing Zhuziju’s important position in Taiwan’s agricultural history. It is also an excellent place for the establishment of a transfer point for the Zhuzihu community’s transport interchange and entrance.
The plan has already won the approval of the managing unit, the Ministry of National Defense. Following the principle of helping local development, Yangmingshan National Park HQ is carrying out related planning and is discussing joint management plans with the local community so that the historical building can be preserved, culture reproduced and the old building is given social development, information service, interpretation and education and display functions. This will set a precedent for cultural preservation, local development, military use and leisure services.
