East and west sections of Swallow Grotto Trail opened on January 6

Closed due to earthquake damage, Swallow Grotto Trail partially reopened on January 6. The eastern section extends from the eastern entrance to the trail, passes through Jinheng Park, over Jinheng Bridge and ends at Xitong Wind Gap, around 750 meters in length. The western section extends for 250 meters from Zhuilu Cliff. The middle section is still closed because of serious damage.

Cars cannot turn around easily on the eastern section so the trail is only open to pedestrians, bicycles and motorcycles at present, to ensure visitor safety and recreational quality. The western section is open to pedestrians and vehicles.

The earth and rocks deposited on the trail by the landslides have been removed but the barriers and trail foundations have been seriously damaged and only a three meter wide part of the trail is passable. The rocks above the trail are also unstable. It will be reopened in full when repairs are completed and the situation permits.

After the recent rains Taroko National Park HQ calls on visitors to Taroko Gorge to wear hard hats and pay attention to rock falls at all times.
