A new species of crab, looking like an overripe strawberry, found in Kenting National Park’s waters
In the long-term ecological survey carried out in 2009 by National Ocean University at the behest of Kenting National Park a species of crab never previously recorded in Taiwan was discovered. It resembled Neoliomera Pubescens of the Family Xanthidae but looked different to the others members of this family and was confirmed as a new species. Its body is around 2.5 cm wide and is red with white speckles, looking very much like an overripe strawberry, leading to it being called “strawberry crab” by some people.
The successive discovery of new species or newly recorded species in Kenting National Park shows the important role of the park in maintaining species diversity and is the result of the long term conservation research and ecological protection efforts of the national park HQ. It is a great pity that many new species become extinct as a result of human actions before they are even discovered. It is hoped that this new discovery will encourage people to care more about the natural environment.
