Taiwan’s first mountaineering school officially opened in Taroko National Park on January 28

The director general of the CPA, Mr.Yeh Shih-wen, figures from Taiwan’s climbing community and rangers from Taiwan’s national parks were in attendance for the opening ceremony for Taiwan’s first mountaineering school, which has the mission of raising the public’s mountain climbing related knowledge and skill level and increasing safety awareness.

Mr. Yeh said that the school will be a platform for mountain climbing education and the passing on of experience. In the future the focus will not just be on teaching climbing skills, it will also teach climbing theory, food and overseas expedition related knowledge and will, in particular, attempt to teach students how to learn from mountains.

Park director You Deng-liang said that the main elements of the school’s educational work will be “climbing,” “exploring” and “trails” and this year 24 climbing and practical experience courses have been planned. It is hoped that the school will teach people to respect the environment and pay attention to safety when venturing into the mountains and exploring nature.
