Xue Mountain’s west ridge climbing route reopened on April 16

The reopening of Xue Mountain’s west ridge route was delayed by the cold spell in January which made climbing difficult and potentially dangerous. With the temperature has risen, the chance of snow lower and the accumulated snow melting, the route is set to reopen on April 16. Park entry applications can be made on-line from today. Climbers wishing to use this route should apply for mountain and park entry permits in advance in accordance with the rules.

The route is 59 kilometers long and involves climbing to the main peak of Xueshan Mountain from Wuling, then descending via Xiboke Mountain, Huoshi Mountain, Danan Mountain, Gongshui Mountain, Touying Mountain, Qiju Mountain and Daxue Mountain, reaching Pipida Mountain saddle, then following 230 Forest Road to Xiaoxue Mountain cabin. It crosses Huoshi Mountain, Touying Mountain, Daxue Mountain and Zhong Xue Mountain, all amongst the 100 highest peaks of Taiwan. Due to the relative difficulty of the route, the dense silver grass and arrow bamboo in some places along the way, the rugged terrain, frequent rock falls and the slipperiness of the trail after the snow season, climbing groups must meet the following conditions.

  1. A highly experienced mountain guide must lead the group.
  2. A complete climbing plan should be set in advance.
  3. The group members must be fit and well-equipped.
