Conservation volunteers help clean up Taroko National Park

Taroko National Park Headquarters’ personnel carry out regular cleaning work to give visitors a clean park environment for leisure. The refuse dropped by visitors in high mountain areas, despite limited personnel and the inaccessibility of these areas, is also cleaned by park personnel when they are on patrol and, periodically, by teams of volunteers.

Recently 12 volunteers went into the mountains from Siyuan Yakou and then followed the 710 forest road trailhead past Mazhen cabin to Nanhu cirque, picking up rubbish as they walked. The rubbish they collected was separated at Nanhu and Xueling cabins and each team member was responsible for carrying one bag of rubbish down the mountain.

As well as clearing up rubbish the volunteers also carried out conservation and permit inspection work and carried out simple maintenance of public facilities, meaning that their workload was heavy. Taroko Park HQ calls on climbers to follow the principle of “Leave nothing, take nothing” when in the national park and take their own rubbish away down the mountain for proper disposal and, in doing so, help maintain the pristine state of the high mountains.
