Kenting National Park begins shark patrols on land and sea to ensure public safety

Recently a number of bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas) sightings in the sea off Jianshi, Checheng Township have been reported in the news. Although this sea area is outside the park and there is no direct effect on the safety of visitors in the Kenting, Nanwan and Sail Rock sea areas that are under the park HQ’s jurisdiction, concern that bull sharks may appear has led the park HQ to call on visitors to pay attention to safety and to take the following precautions.

  1. The coastguard has been asked to make anti-shark patrol one of its main tasks in offshore sea areas.
  2. Inshore sea areas will be patrolled by Kenting National Park wardens in speed boats.
  3. The coast will be patrolled by park wardens and police.
  4. Beach warden have been stationed in the Baisha, Nanwan and Dawan and Sail Rock sea areas to watch out for sharks from fixed points.
  5. When necessary, sea leisure operators will be immediately informed of any shark sightings to ensure public safety.
  6. The Fisheries Administration will be asked for assistance should bull sharks be spotted or caught in the waters off Kenting.
