The skies over Dongsha Marine National Park are busy as the autumn bird migration begins

Conservation personnel from Dongsha Marine National Park’s Dongsha Management Station observed and photographed 55 species of bird in 20 families from August to the beginning of October, some rarely-seen birds, including Chinese goshawk, common kestrel, plaintive cuckoo, red-cheeked starling, drongo cuckoo, koel, and dollarbird.

Dongsha Island is small in area but attracts an unusually large number of bird species because, the only land for miles around, it is the perfect resting point for migratory birds on their long flight. Strengthened conservation work means that much of the park is undisturbed by human activity, apart from regular conservation patrols, and active carrying out of marine ecological educational work has ensured that the men of the coast guard stationed on Dongsha Island don’t disturb wildlife, making Dongsha a paradise for migratory birds.
