The number of winter-visitor black-faced spoonbills counted in the Tainan area has reached 1,671, exceeding last year’s number and setting a new record
This year’s Greater Tainan black-faced spoonbill population survey is being carried out jointly by the national park headquarters together with the Wild Bird Society of Tainan City and the Tainan County Black-faced Spoonbill Conservation Association. The first stage of the winter survey was conduced on October 10 and 47 spoonbills were recorded. The survey counted 1,671 spoonbills on November 28, mostly in the black-faced spoonbill reserve, a number surpassing last year’s record 1,010. The global survey of black-faced spoonbills on January 10, 2010, counted 2347 birds, with 1185, or over 50% of the total global population, in the Greater Tainan area. The winter survey being carried out this year shows that the winter-visitor spoonbills’ habitat has extended from beyond the reserve to Sicao Wildlife Refuge and Qigu’s Dingshan area.
