Species of Fiddler Crab recorded in Taiwan for the first time in Dongsha Atoll National Park
Marine National Park Headquarters’ Dongsha Management Station rangers recorded a Uca jocelynae fiddler crab in the Dongsha Island’s lagoon, the first time this species has been recorded in Taiwan, a discovery providing new insight into Dongsha Atoll National Park’s bio-diversity.
Uca jocelynae was discovered by Professor Shi Ci-de of the Department of Life Sciences of National Chunghsing University in 2010. It was named after renowned scholar Jocelyn Crane in recognition of her contribution to the study of fiddler crabs. It is currently known that the Uca jocelynae is an island creature of the western Pacific and its range covers Taiwan’s main island, Penghu, the Okinawan islands of Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu in Oceania.
The distribution of Uca jocelynaeon Dongsha Island is limited to the beach on the northern tip of the central lagoon, and it also shares its habitat with other fiddler crabs.
