Shei-pa National Park Management Headquarters calls on climbers to attach importance to climbing safety
Since one of Shei-pa National Park’s long-distance climbing route, the Mt. Xue West Ridge Route, was reopened last April, a number of mountain rescue incident have occurred, with most incidents involving high-altitude sickness, and the rate of occurrence is increasing rapidly. Figures show that each time there is a mountain rescue incident involving high-altitude sickness 0.57 people die;it is thus extremely important to avoid high-altitude sickness.
At present the West Ridge Route access road Mt. Daxue 260 forest road is impassable for vehicles and a walk of 28.5 kilometers is required to reach the trailhead for Mt. Daxue, adding one and half or two days to the time required to climb the ridge route and meaning that, if an accident occurs, it could take up to three days for rescuers to reach a distressed climber on foot. If the weather is bad and a helicopter cannot fly the consequences could be terrible. Consequently, before setting out to climb Mt. Daxue, in addition to carrying out physical training and honing climbing skills, choosing an experienced guide with a good reputation and preparing equipment and food fully, increasing altitude steadily so that the body can adjust to the increase is the best way to avoid high-altitude sickness; avoiding intense physical activity, staying warm and avoiding alcohol also help reduce the chance of being afflicted; it is also advisable to avoid being left alone or climbing alone because there will be no one to help if an accident happens and also the chance of being attacked by a wild animal will be decreased. If climbing a mountain over 3000 meters high, it is suggested that one night is spent at altitude of around 2500 meters for altitude acclimatization.
Before setting out for the mountains, climbers should check the weather forecast and road conditions;if a typhoon is approaching, the mountains should be avoided. Before climbing a high mountain, a thorough climbing plan and suitably intense training should be completed and park and ecological reserve entry permits also obtained in advance according to the regulations.
