In response to the random discarding of leftover food and toilet paper at Yuanfeng Cabin, the national park HQ said that when climbers climb Yushan they must respect and cherish its beautiful natural environment and carry their own rubbish down the mountain and dispose of it properly. 

Yushan National Park Headquarters said that Yuanfeng Cabin and its camping ground have been opened to provide accommodation for climbers this year as a substitute for Paiyun Lodge which is being rebuilt. It has attracted a large number of climbers and some individual climbers and groups have shown they lack basic respect for nature by randomly discarding leftover food and toilet paper around Yuanfeng Cabin. The park HQ calls on people to together cherish Yushan’s beautiful environment, especially as the final stage of the New 7 Wonders of Nature competition, in which Yushan is competing, is approaching. Protecting Yushan’s unique natural sights and cultural relics and other environmental resources depends not only on the efforts of park HQ staff and conservation volunteers, it also requires that climbers behave in a moral way and protect the mountain together.

The park HQ said that Yuanfeng Cabin is at an elevation of 3800 meters and, because of the fragile high-mountain environment, at present, on weekdays as well as at weekends/holiday times, only 15 beds are available in the cabin and 21 people allowed to camp every day. Every week cleaning workers are dispatched to clean up the area around the cabin 2-3 times and at weekends and holidays conservation volunteers are stationed at the cabin to strengthen environmental education work, with the aim of protecting the quality of the cabin’s environment for its users. It is hoped that climbers together protect and cherish Yushan and bravely report and criticize the bad behavior of the small number of irresponsible climbers and climbing groups that discard leftover food and toilet paper, to preserve the beauty of Yushan.
