Manjhou Township Patrol Team Receives Flag of Approval to Protect Eagles Migrating South
Kenting National Park is situated in the most southern part of Taiwan—Hengchun Peninsula. Its unique geography and terrain has long been a favorite bypass station of various migratory birds. Every fall in September and October, the skies of Hengchun Peninsula abound with surprises and amazement brought by Chinese Goshawks and Grey-faced Buzzards on their migratory path. This year, in order to let the Chinese Goshawks and Grey-faced Buzzards safely and successfully migrate to the south for the winter, Kenting National Park and the Pingtung County Government recruited residents from Manjhou Area to form the Manjhou Township Eagle Protection Patrol Team. September 21st saw the public flag awarding of the team, thus opening the “protect the eagles and anti-hunt job” ceremony, in high hopes of combining the power of the government and local community in their efforts of protecting the ecosystem of migratory birds. Chen Zhen-rong, Director of Kenting National Park, expressed: “Although the migration of these raptors across the Hengchun Peninsula is short-lived—lasting from half a day to a day, we hope that under the protection of the Eagle Protection Patrol Team, these fragile guests from the north can safely make their way to the south and successfully back to the north next spring. That way, the continuous cycle of life will forever sing “legend of the wind” for the Hengchun Peninsula.”
