Golden Breeze and Yushan Hawks: Bird-of-Prey Migration and Eagle-Watching at the Yushan National Park
The YushanNational Park Headquarters recommend everyone to visit Linjhih Mountain,Taiwan’s first high altitude destination for eagle-watching. Located within the Tataka Recreational Area, Mt.Linjhih offers an uniqueopportunity to catch the sights of eagles at 3,000 feet above sealevel. Although the number of migratory raptors in Mt. Linjhih is less than thatof Kenting, nevertheless an impressive amount of Chinese Goshawks migrating wasrecorded in late September, with over 26,000 individuals recorded as ofSeptember 22nd, half of those observed in Kenting. Researchers havealso observed the phenomenon known as “Eagle take-offs” during early morning atthe Shen Mu River Valley and the Sha Li Shian River Valley, and postulated that these areas may be where the raptors stop-over to rest. TheYushan Park Headquarters suggest that the best time to observe Chinese Goshawksis around mid and late September, and mid-October for the Gray-faced Buzzardeagles. All you need is a 7-10X magnifying binocular and you are ready toobserve these magnificent eagles at north-facing open areas, such as the top ofLinjijh Mountainor the parking lot of the Tataka Visitor Center.
