Golden Breeze and Yushan Hawks: Bird-of-Prey Migration and Eagle-Watching at the Yushan National Park

The Yushan National Park Headquarters recommend everyonevisit Linjhih Mountain, Taiwan’s first high-altitudedestination for eagle-watching. Located within the TatakaRecreational Area, Mt.Linjhih offers a unique opportunity to catch the sight ofeagles at 3,000 feet above sea level. Although the number of migratory raptors in Mt.Linjhih is less than that of Kenting, nevertheless an impressive amount of migratingChinese Goshawks was recorded in late September, with over 26,000 individualbirds recorded as of September 22nd, half of those observed inKenting. Researchers have also observed the phenomenon known as “Eagletake-offs” during early mornings in the Shen Mu River Valley and the Sha Li Shian River Valley, and postulatedthat these areas may be where the raptors stop-over to rest. The Yushan ParkHeadquarters suggest that the best time to observe Chinese Goshawks is aroundmid- and late September, and mid-October for the Gray-faced Buzzard eagles. Allyou need is a pair of 7-10X magnifying binoculars and you are ready to observethese magnificent eagles at north-facing open areas, such as the top of Linjhih Mountainor the parking lot of the Tataka Visitor Center.
