The Most Comprehensive Bird Call Record in Taiwan is Nearing Completion

In 2010, the Yushan National Park Headquarters contracted Mr. Ching Sung Suen of the Yushan Music Society to build a bird call sound database, scheduled to be completed by the end of this year and ready for publication in 2012. There are 189 species of birds in the park, and 360 clips from 136 species are documented in the database, representing almost the entire collection of bird species in the park, save for some that rarely chirp. Although the actual recording took only two years, this database is the result of eight years of field recording efforts, and is also the most complete bird call database ever published in Taiwan. The database showcases a wide variety of bird calling behaviors, such as during socializing, on alert or mating calls. The calls with the most variety and diversity typically belong to the male birds; smaller birds have higher pitched calls, while larger ones have deeper sounds. Some of the unusual examples of bird calls in this database included the Tarzan-like “Oooohhh!” of the Green Pigeons; most surprising are the long-tailed shrikes, which can mimic the “chi-chi-chi” calls of Pied Wagtails. YNPH hopes that this database will bring people even closer to the wonders of Mother Nature.
