Partnering with Indigenous Communities to Build a New Home for Taiwanese Salmon
The Shei-PaNational Park Administration (SNPA) has released over 2500 Taiwanese Salmon fryinto the Sijielan River, the NanhuRiver, the DajiaRiver, the YikawanRiver and the LuoyeweiRiver upstream of the Yousheng River since 2006. However, hurricanedamage meant that very few survived. Since 2009, the SNPA has been drawing onthe experience of indigenous tribal elders to identify river sections that donot flood during hurricanes. The 150 fry released experimentally into the Luoyewei River that year not only rode outTyphoon Morakot with a 40% survival rate but also produced many new young fry thefollowing year. Continued monitoring has found that Taiwanese Salmon are nowexpanding up and down the Yousheng River, proof that thisparticular river section offers a very suitable habitat. As the area has becomea new home for Taiwanese Salmon, experimental releases will be conducted at theLeshan Riverin Songmao, as well as at the Dajia River and the Yikawan Rivernext to Huanshan. 100 pairs of adult fish will be released into the Leshan River,Dajia Riverand Yikawan River on 11/3 and 11/4. The newlyreleased fish are expected to establish a breeding population right away.
