2012 Marine Conservation School Promotion Train Activity Will Commence in June

Taiwan is surrounded by abundant marine resources on all sides. The Marine National Park Headquarters will hold a series of marine resource conservation educational activities, teaching school children to learn to appreciate and protect the ocean. Course contents include introduction to the Dongsha Atoll National Park, marine biology video viewing, learning about coral reef biology, and quizzes with prizes. News of the activity received great responses from schools, and all available quotas were filled on the first day that the event was open for registration. The schools cannot wait for the Marine Conservation School Promotion Train to come to their campuses, which will begin with the first event on June 5th.

The sea grass beds of the Dongsha Island are the largest in Taiwan and also have the most sea grass species, providing a stable and excellent carbon sink. In the past years, the island has seen many exciting incidents, such as the egg laying of the Green turtle (first time in 16 years) and the discovery of new species such as the Neritina siquijorensis (Recluz, 1843) and the Ercolania subviridis, proof of the excellent conservation and research efforts of the MNPH.

To ensure the continuation of conservation, this year's event will feature fun games to stimulate the learning interests of school children and to educate them on the importance of cherishing marine resources through daily life, paving the way for future budding conservation ideals in the hearts of these children.
