Coral Reef checkups and Operation Remove Thorn – Protecting the coral reef ecology of the Southern Four Islets of Penghu
To assess the coral reef conditions and remove the harmful Crown-of-thorns starfish in the southern four islets of Penghu, the MNPH, together with the Penghu Marine Biology Research Center (Taiwan Fisheries Research Institute, Council of Agriculture) and the Penghu County Government Agriculture and Fisheries, held the "Coral Reef Check-up and Operation Remove Thorn at the Southern Four Islets of Penghu from 2012 June 25th to June 26th. This operation invited more than 30 divers and staff from local organizations like the Penghu National Scenic Area Administration (Tourism Bureau), the Penghu County Government Fire Bureau and the Penghu Zooxanthellae Association, working together to get rid of the high density Crown-of-thorns populations at the Sijiyu Islet coral reefs.
