Lanyu’s balangay Si Mangavang (Port Calls) set sail for experience exchange with Austronesian Culture

In celebration of the 100th Year of the Republic, the Marine National Park Headquarters, Lan Yu Township Office and Taitung County Government organized the project "Cross the Kuroshio, Visit Taiwan", showcasing the traditional shipbuilding craftsmanship of Lan Yu's Tao tribe by building an 18 oar balangay Si Mangavang (Port Calls), crewed by 18 brave Tao men and which sailed with blessings to the previously unvisited west coast of Taiwan. The journey lasted 700km and the vessel successfully arrived in Taipei. This year (2012), the three agencies collaborated again to organize the 2012 Festival of Austronesian Arts - Lan Yu Balangay Sailing and Marine Cultural Exchange Project. The balangay will be displayed at the 261 warehouse of the Village of Railroad Arts in Taitung City, and the exhibition of Lan Yu Marine Culture will take place, showcasing the natural wisdom and craftsmanship of the Tao People, as well as exhibitions of modern arts and crafts. Everyone is invited to come and cherish the unique marine culture of the Orchid Island.
