About 400 different species of butterflies have been found in the “kingdom of butterflies” that is Taiwan. At Yangmingshan National Park, up to 180 species of butterflies have been recorded. From May to July every year, many nectar plants, such as Eupatorium shimadai, wild angelica, and Formosan elderberry, are entering the blossom season due to warmer weather. Many butterflies also begin to eclose during this season. At the National Park, the hills covered with arrow bamboo and silver grass are full of Eupatorium and spotted butterflies, and Datun Mountain is the most approachable site with the largest number of them. It is a magnificent sight.

Datun Mountain road is one of the important butterfly watching routes at the Park. To maintain air quality and safety of the tourists, all vehicles (including bikes) aside from public service vehicles are prohibited from using the road from June 1 to June 23. The Yangmingshan National Park Headquarters suggests using public transportation to relax and enjoy the wonderful sights of the park. If you still prefer driving, we suggest parking your car at one of parking lots of the MRT stations. You can transfer to the Red 5 Bus from Jiantan MRT Station, Bus 260 or Royal Passenger Bus 1717 from Taipei Main Station, Bus 230 or the S9 Bus from Beitou MRT Station, or the S8 Bus from Shipai MRT Station, all toward Yangmingshan Station or Bus Terminus. After arriving, you can then transfer to the Leisure Bus 108 and get off at Erziping Station.

The temperature changes a lot in the mountains, often 3 to 5°C lower than in the city. Please remember to bring your own rain gear, warm clothes, and personal medicine. To “Leave No Trace” (LNT), please do not pick flowers, break off branches, or touch butterflies and other animals. Finally, please properly dispose of your trash. Thank you for your cooperation.
