Be Careful of the Monkeys! Please Do Not Go Near Wild Animals!

Recently, Formosan rock macaques have caused biting and scratching injuries to ten tourists at the Tataka area in Yushan National Park. Therefore, the Yushan National Park Headquarters is calling on all visitors to keep their distance from the monkeys. Formosan rock macaques are wild animals, not cute domesticated animals that can be approached. Visitors to areas where the monkeys reside should not linger in the area, and should not feed the animals or go near them to take pictures.

In the event of an attack that leads to bites or scratches, visitors should immediately flush the injury with clean water, a cleanser or soap continuously for 15 minutes, and request assistance from the nearest visitor’s center. Visitors should seek treatment from a hospital after they have received first aid with providone-iodine, and should at least receive at least a tetanus vaccine. Because of the recent spate of rabies passed between warm-blooded animals, visitors should also consider rabies vaccines and vaccines against other zoonotic infectious diseases.
