Safe Passage for Land Crabs of Hengchun Peninsula, Thank You for Waiting 120 Seconds
Summer nights in Kenting are full of life, whether they are making sounds or not. A force of female crabs grows in the coastal forest, tens of thousands of eggs in their stomachs urging them to rush towards the ocean. The expecting mothers anxiously head out on a dangerous journey of reproduction, while rushing traffic is unaware of the slaughter that it is causing. Vehicles meet crabs on an eventful road, where there are joys and sorrows of life encountering one another. Friendly drivers let land crabs pass first, and their respect for life is a force protecting land crabs. To protect female crabs as they cross the roads, Kenting National Park Headquarters will implement traffic control at the 2 km section from 39.5k to 41.5k of Provincial Highway No.26, reducing the number of lanes from four to two, closing the outer lane of each side. The traffic control will be implemented on August 28~30, September 27~29, and October 27~29 (the 15, 16, and 17 day of the 7, 8 and 9 months of the lunar calendar) from 18:30 to 20:30 the first two months and 18:00 to 20:00 the last month. The scheduled road closing “Safe Passage for Land Crabs of Hengchun Peninsula, Thank You for Waiting 120 Seconds” will be carried out for 120 seconds at the 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 minute marks of each hour at the 39.5k and 41.5k points, so that land crabs can safely cross the road to lay eggs. Furthermore, Pingtung County Environmental Protection Union and Pingtung County Education Industrial Union will jointly promote land crab conservation at the locations. We hope to gain everyone’s support, and with your patience, friendliness, and willingness to let land crabs go first, their path to reproduction will become safer.
