Abundant results gained from discussions on six topics of Kinmen’s sustainable development by scholars from around the world

Kinmen National Park Headquarters held the “Future of a Historical Island: International Conference on Kinmen’s History, Culture and Ecology” on October 3rd and 4th in celebration of the 20th anniversary of Kinmen National Park. The conference summarized the results of past endeavors and discussed future development directions of Kinmen. The conference was co-organized by the National Park Association in Taiwan, National Taiwan Normal University Department of East Asian Studies, and National Quemoy University Graduate Institute of Culture and History of Hokkien, and invited scholars from Taiwan, China, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, the U.S., and France. Four speeches were given and 20 academic papers on biodiversity, environmental protection, history, cultural diversity, cultural heritage, and cold war of East Asia were published during the conference, contemplating the past, present and future of Kinmen through cross-disciplinary dialogue. The speakers proposed Kinmen’s historical position and contemporary value from four aspects. Professor Liu Tsui-Jung, Academician of Academia Sinica, provided a retrospect and outlook of Kinmen’s industrial development based on the concept of environmental capacity; Dean Chen Chih-Ping of Xiamen University pointed out that almost all of the turmoil in Kinmen’s history was forced upon Kinmen by external forces, and that it was a basis for understanding Kinmen’s marine characteristics.
