New butterfly species discovered in Kinmen – “Eurema blanda”

Kinmen National Park commissioned insect expert Chang Yung-Jen to conduct a survey of insects and photograph the ecology in Lieyu this year (2015). This is part of its continuous efforts in biodiversity surveys and research. The survey of Chang Yung-Jen discovered a new butterfly species in Lieyu in mid-July this year – Eurema blanda. He observed the female butterfly lay eggs on young Albizia lebbeck, and larva gathered together eating the leaves. He also discovered large numbers of Eurema blanda larva on Albizia lebbeck near the entrance of Doumen Ancient Trial on Mt. Taiwu on Kinmen island in mid-August. Determining based on the portion of tree leaves eaten and egg laying, Eurema blanda appeared in Kinmen at roughly the same time as Lieyu. Eurema blanda has become an extremely superior butterfly species in both Lieyu and Kinmen, and dozens of Eurema blanda can sometimes be seen drinking water on the surface of wetland. It is a beautiful scene to see large numbers of yellow butterflies (Eurema blanda) flying next to roads in the mountains and fields due to the large population. Eurema blanda can be considered the most eye-catching new immigrant of Kinmen this year.
