Kinmen National Park Investigates the Migrating Path and Habitat of Common Buzzard Using Satellite Tracker

Kinmen is located on the migrating path of birds in East Asia, and many birds of prey pass through Kinmen each year. Hence, many birds of prey can be seen in Kinmen. Statistics show that 32 species in 5 families of birds have been documented in Kinmen. To further understand the behavior, habitat distribution, environment, and population of birds of prey, Kinmen National Park commissioned the research team of Professor Liu Hsiao-Ju of the Raptor Research Group of Taiwan in 2014 to investigate birds of prey in Kinmen over a two-year period. Most migrating birds of prey that appear in Kinmen are rare migrating birds, lost or passing through, only the common buzzard and Eurasian Kestrel can be seen throughout the entire winter, in which the common buzzard is the most commonly seen and has the largest population. Hence, the investigation targeted common buzzard and tied satellite trackers to them to observe their range of activity, term of stay and whether or not the birds returned to Kinmen the following year.
