Ten species of bats documented in artificial bat nests at Shei-Pa National Park

Ten species of bats have been documented in the artificial bat nests in the Shei-Jian area of Shei-Pa National Park. Investigators found three species of bats in compartments with different designs in the largest artificial bat nest in the Shei-Jian area last month, in which two of the species were documented for the first time in artificial bat nests. Shei-Pa National Park began surveying bats in 2007, and has documented 29 insect eating bats since then, accounting for roughly 90% of all insect eating bats in Taiwan (32 species), including many rare species and the only protected species of bats – Coelops frithii formosanus. Furthermore, Shei-Pa National Park Headquarters also set up numerous small artificial bat nests in Shei-Jian and Guan-Wu areas to document bat species. Two new species of bats were documented this year, both in the large bat nest in Shei-Jian area, namely Miniopterus schreibersii fuliginosus and Rhinolophus formosae Sanborn.
