Marine National Park Headquarters Held the First Beach Cleaning Event on Xijiyu, Penhu

The blue cove at Xijiyu in Penhu ishighly embraced by people. Many tourists would travel all the way from MakongCity by boat to check out the special scenery when sunshine goes through thecove and lay on the sea. It has transformed Xijiyu from an unknown island intoa famous tourism spot, which attracts overseas tourists to pay visits at theblue cove. As a result, the South Penghu Marine National Park, established inJune 2014, has also received many tourist’s attention.

While people are visiting thebeautiful scenery, many tourists have also found that there was a lot of garbagefloating on the sea nearby the magnificent basalt. Most of the garbage was polystyrene.When looking out from a higher spot, a pile of white polystyrene together withblack basalt not only deteriorated the natural scenery but also polluted thesea.

Due to the peak tourism season inPenhu, Marine National Park Headquarters (MNPH) decided take the action toensure oceanic preservation, maintain coastal scenery, and reduce garbagepollution to oceanic environment. On May 1st, there will be a beachcleaning event on South Penghu Marine National Park for environmentaleducation. 22 volunteers from Taiwan Promise Public Welfare Association,Veterans Association of Paratroopers & Special Forces, ROC, Taroko NationalPark Volunteer Team, and Novatek are invited to join the event on Xijiyu.

Asa result of the event, there were 165 large bags of garage collected at thenorth shore, weighing at a total of 857 kg, from which, polystyrene and plasticbottles made up the majority. MNPH states that South Penghu Marine NationalPark has rich coral reef and magnificent basalt scenery. In order to sustainthe environment, MNPH further emphasizes to the public not to toss garbage orleave garbage behind when visiting the park. Considering the inconvenience ofcleaning a remote island, please take garbage back with you and reduce the harmto the oceanic environment.
