Attention Hikers: Bear in Dafen Area
A maintenance worker with the last name Lee has had two brief encounters with a Formosan black bear, which was about 200 centimeters tall and weighed more than a hundred kilograms while he was working on suspension bridges along the Batongguan Japanese Era Crossing Trail. He managed to drive the bear away by blowing a whistle and making noises with a steel bar, and then reported the incident to the authority concerned.
According to the administration of Yushan National Park, Walami and Dafen, located in the eastern area of the park, are the major habitats of Formosan black bears (Ursus thibetanus formosanus). Normally, they do not attack people. However, when they’re trying to protect little cubs or looking for food, they might roar to scare people away or even attack. The administration especially urges tourists to go hiking in numbers, carry pepper spray and a whistle or a bell to make noise. If anyone happens to run into a bear, please stay calm and leave quietly and immediately. Do not be too frightened or confront it. When staying in a mountain cabin, put away food in sealed containers, and do not randomly throw away your leftovers. Stay alert at all times.
