8 Newly Recorded Species were Discovered at Kinmen National Park when Conducting Insect Resource Survey at Dadan Island

Given that there were no comprehensive surveys on the overall insect resource at Lieyu region, in order to completely record a comprehensive directory on the insects at Lieyu region, for 2 consecutive years since 2015, Kinmen National Park Headquarters has hired Mr. Jhang Yong-ren from Formosa Ecological Company in conducting the “Photographical Project on the Insects at Lieyu”. Kinmen National Park Headquarters expects that through the works of Mr. Chang, a fundamental survey on the insect resource of Lieyu region can be established while collecting visual information simultaneously. The region of survey included Lieyu region and Dadan Island.

After 2 years of survey, besides the largely populated beetle of Xylotrupes siamensis that is commonly seen in July and August, a total of 312 species of insects were being recorded at Dadan Island.

Among them, 8 newly recorded species in Taiwan were discovered. They are:Chlaenius junceus,Coptops lichenea,Gonioctena fulva,Vespa tropica,Plutodes exquisita,Psilalcis galsworthyi,Astictopterus jama,Nokona pernix.

Given that Dadan Island, an island with only 0.79 km2 area of land, has more than 300 species of insects, it is an extremely rich resource on insect diversity and is worthy of further observation and research.
