The First 666 Square-meter Farmland by Mt. Yushan – Promotions of "Yushan Walami" Achieve Great Results Again
Since 2014, Yushan National Park Headquarters has worked with many public and private entities and counseled Nan’an Tribal Village - a village in Yuli Township, Hualien County, near the eastern part of Yushan National Park – towards ecological farming and organic agriculture. After 5 years of hard work, the organic farmland has covered over 17 hectares of land; and with the full dedication of 11 farmers, it produces nearly 80 tons of organic and environmentally-friendly rice every year. Continuous ecological surveying and habitat cultivation will take place on the farmland area specifically for aphyocypris kikuchii, a precious species of freshwater fish endemic to the streams of eastern and northern Taiwan.
This year, the "Yushan Walami" project team has gifted rice to 13 middle and primary schools in southern Hualien to give the schools a nutritious lunch with vegetables for a day. In addition, outstanding primary school students were specially invited to the one-day event "Nan’an Food and Agriculture Camp for Children", where farmers and village elders guided the students to learn about the ecological environment and management of organic farmland areas in Nan’an, as well as traditional Bunun craftsmanship and food culture. This enabled students to develop an environmentally-friendly concept and attitude towards the land by learning from the surrounding environment familiar to them.
