National Park Cross-Regional Cooperation - Releasing the Formosan Landlocked Salmon
Shei-Pa National Park Headquarters has been engaged in 25 years of local and ex situ conservation efforts. Release of fish took place at the historical habitats of Chichiawan Creek, Luoyewei Creek, Skilan Creek, and Leshan Creek, successfully slowing the threat of extinction faced by the National Treasure Fish—the Formosan Landlocked Salmon. Through investigations carried out by researchers, these rivers and streams all currently have stable and healthy satellite populations. This October (2019), release of 400 fries around 10 centimeters in size and about 11 months-old took place in the past habitat of Xiaotanxi Bay. It is hoped that a new peak in salmon conservation work can be reached.
The Shei-Pa National Park Headquarters and Taroko National Park Headquarters have successfully established a major satellite population at Xiaotanxi Bay of Hehuan Creek to reduce some of the risk of the population of Chichiawan Creek, and jointly established a positive cooperation model for the breeding of the National Treasure Fish—the Formosan Landlocked Salmon.
