Conservation Efforts in Dongsha See Results: 5 Newly Recorded Species in Taiwan
From 2018 to 2019, the Marine National Park Headquarters commissioned the teams of Prof. Shih Hsi-Te of the National Chung Hsing University and Deputy Director Chiu Yu-wen of the NCKU Research and Development Foundation to execute the crustacean and gastropod mollusk biodiversity survey project. There were 134 crustacean species in total, of which 74 were newly recorded species on Dongsha Islands and 4 were newly recorded species in Taiwan. Among the 321 gastropod mollusk species, 146 were newly recorded species and 1 was a newly recorded family and species in Taiwan, marking five new records for Taiwan. One of the newly recorded species in Taiwan, the peasiella, is a mini gastropod mollusk only 2mm in size.
The Marine National Park Headquarters once again published two hand books: "Swordsmen of the Moon - Seaside Crab Species on the Dongsha Islands" and "Precious Dongsha - Common Mollusks". Scientific knowledge is explained in a way that is easy to understand, enabling readers to learn about the biodiversity of the Dongsha Atolls and elevate their environmental and conservation awareness.
