Shei-Pa Patrol - Putting Exotic Species in Their Place

On April 9, 2022, the Shei-Pa National Park Headquarters worked with Mos Burger at the Wenshui Visitor Center and organized a work holiday of removing land and aquatic exotic species. Nearly 100 volunteers participated in the removal of exotic animals and plants. The aim of the event is to recruit the power of the general public in removing exotic animals and plants in order to protect the environment and the native species of Taiwan.

Based on the Catalogue of Life in Taiwan in TaiBNET by Academia Sinica, currently there are approximately 7,867 botanic species in Taiwan. Among which, 2,991 are exotic species that have mostly been domesticated.

The activity mainly involved the removal of 4 kinds of plants: mile-a-minute weed, white popinac, Spanish needles and Pluchea carolinensis. The outcome was excellent; a total of 120 kilograms were removed.

The invasion of exotic species has had unmistakable ecological impacts on the habitats of native species. As the invasive species enter an environment, they threaten the survival of native species and cause their death through occupation, predation, parasitism or infection. In order to protect native animals and plants, the removal of exotic species is a pressing matter.
