The Longpan Park and Baisha Public Toilets Won the German iF Design Award
The Longpan Park and the Baisha Recreation Area are located respectively in the east and west corners of the peninsula in the Kenting National Park. Their unique landscape attracts many visitors. However, they are located in remote areas without adequate public toilets nearby. For this reason, the Kenting National Park Headquarters mandated the Lin Yizhang Architects to design public toilets, taking into consideration the integration with the scenic environment and the needs of women, children and disabled persons. The construction of the toilets began in October 2020. The toilets were formally enabled for use in mid-June, 2021.
The Longpan public toilet was inspired by the local coral stone holes, combined with the architectural technique of enframed scenery to present sunrises and sunsets. The architecture itself blends into the Longpan grassland, making it low-profile and natural.
The Baisha public toilet is themed around beach stones. The architecture resembles two white stones crossing with each other. The reserved voids and the design concept of co-existence with existing trees emphasize the sustainable utilization of the environment. In addition, in order to ensure the balance between adequate lighting in the interior and low light pollution in the exterior, the architecture used indirect lighting, which not only provided sufficient interior lighting but also minimized the effects of lights on the nocturnal environment.
