Construction and Planning Agency Signing MOU on Afforestation with Wan Hai Lines
Mr. Wu Hsin-hsou, Director-General of the Construction and Planning Agency, attended the “Signing and First Planting Ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding for the Cooperative Afforestation and Maintenance Project between the Construction and Planning Agency and Wan Hai Lines” in the second nursery of Yangmingshan National Park today. In the future, both parties will plant approximately 400,000 Taiwan native tree species in various appropriate locations, as well as upholding the three principles of “protection of local biodiversity”, “right place for the right species”, and “Taiwan native tree species” to establish an eight-year afforestation partnership.
Director-General Wu said that the National Park has abundant natural resources, and most of them are primary forests. In principle, the main effort is to preserve natural succession, but when challenged by external environmental changes, such as invasion of exotic species and loss of terrain, it is necessary to maintain the overall natural environment and resources with conservation measures. These measures include “removal of exotic species”, “coastal afforestation”, “habitat restoration”, and “replanting of native seedlings”.
Subsequently, planting will be carried out on 135 hectares of land in Yangmingshan National Park, Kenting National Park, Taroko National Park, Kinmen National Park, Taijiang National Park, Shoushan National Nature Park, Kaohsiung Metropolitan Park, and Taichung Metropolitan Park. It is expected to mitigate the impact of greenhouse gases on the environment as a whole and at the same time maintain the biodiversity of Taiwan’s natural ecosystem.
