Taijiang National Park Will Enact Traffic Control Measures from July to September to Protect Crabs

Menghuan Pond and the surrounding coastal forests in Chengxi Village, Annan District, Tainan City, are the main breeding grounds for land crabs in the Taijiang National Park and are home to the largest population of brown land crabs (Cardisoma carnifex) in Taiwan. The crab breeding season, when the crabs release their eggs into the sea, lasts from June to November. The Taijiang National Park Headquarters (hereinafter referred to as the Headquarters) of the National Park Service of the Ministry of the Interior has commissioned Wetlands Taiwan to organize the Action Plan of Citizens and Scientists to Protect Land Crabs. The plan will be implemented between July and September and includes traffic control measures to protect the crabs when crossing roads.

In addition to traffic control measures, the Headquarter’s Action Plan of Citizens and Scientists to Protect Land Crabs also aims to train volunteers to conduct surveys and patrols during the brown land crab breeding season. Joint patrols with the Seventh Division of the Seventh Special Police Corps (7SPC) of the National Police Agency of the Ministry of the Interior will also be conducted to protect the crab’s breeding grounds. The public is urged not to drive on the coastal roads during the breeding season and to avoid the traffic control areas from July to September so that the female land crabs can cross the roads safely and give birth to their offspring without any problems!
