First-time SWS Holds Annual Meeting in Taiwan National Park Service, Ministry of the Interior Promotes International Collaboration for Carbon Reduction and Sequestration
The National Park Service, Ministry of the Interior is set to host the "Society of Wetland Scientists (SWS) 2024 Annual Meeting" from November 11 to 16 in Taipei. This event, co-organized by the National Park Service, Ministry of the Interior and the U.S.-based Society of Wetland Scientists, is dedicated to advancing the understanding, conservation, protection, and restoration of wetlands, as well as promoting their sustainable development through scientific management. Since its establishment in 1980, this is the first time the annual meeting held in Asia, with Taipei as the chosen location. This presents a significant opportunity to promote Taiwan’s wetland conservation efforts on an international stage. Taiwan's wetlands face emerging challenges such as climate change and natural carbon sinks, and this event will feature international speakers who are experts in wetland carbon sequestration. Their knowledge and experience will facilitate international cooperation, provide new opportunities for Taiwan's wetland conservation mechanisms, and inform future national conservation policies.
The National Park Service, Ministry of the Interior emphasized that this annual meeting demonstrates Taiwan's commitment to aligning its wetland conservation efforts with international standards and strengthening international cooperation. The event will be supported by four major government ministries: the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and the Ocean Affairs Council. Numerous domestic and international wetland experts, scholars, and NGOs have been invited to participate, fostering the exchange of professional knowledge. The call for papers for the conference has been completed, with a total of 130 oral presentations, 50 poster presentations, and 13 special topic symposiums, gathering experts and scholars from nearly 30 countries. They will share their experiences in wetland conservation and management, as well as strategies for addressing emerging issues such as climate change. This will provide Taiwan with valuable insights that can be reflected in national policy implementation.
The National Park Service, established on September 20, 2023, has integrated the management of nine national parks, one national nature park, 58 key wetlands, and coastal areas. This marks a new opportunity and a greater responsibility for national land conservation. The upcoming conference will serve as an important knowledge base for the National Park Service to comprehensively promote carbon reduction and sequestration, share its experiences in implementing the "Wetland Conservation Act," and expand international cooperation in wetland conservation. The public is encouraged to join in supporting the future of wetlands and participate in the sustainable conservation of our national lands.
「The "Society of Wetland Scientists (SWS) 2024 Annual Meeting" will be held from November 12 to 14, 2024, at the Taipei International Convention Center, followed by various wetland field visits on November 15 and 16. Everyone is invited to witness the beauty of Taiwan's wetlands and national parks. Detailed event schedules and registration information will be available on the official "SWS 2024" website.
