Taroko National Park Headquarters’ Short Film about April 3 Earthquake Hopes to Raise Awareness of Taroko Park Reconstruction

The Taroko National Park Headquarters has unveiled a short film by director Mai Jue-Ming showing scenes from the aftermath of the recent earthquake. The short film shows footage of volunteers collecting native plant seeds to make seed balls to be planted in landslide-affected areas, and of National Airborne Service Corp’s helicopters helping to rebuild the villages of Datong (Skadang) and Dali (Xoxos). The film conveys confidence in and hope for the reconstruction and restoration of the park.

Liu Shou-Li, director of Taroko National Park Headquarters, stated that the agency has moved from the initial phase of disaster relief to the reconstruction and restoration phase. Despite the severity of the earthquake, efforts continue to repair facilities, improve safety, and restore the local ecosystem. Liu expects that some of the scenic spots will be partially reopened by the end of the year, with long-term planning taking into account the landscape and ecology as well as the safety of recreationists.

The native plant seeds collected by the volunteers were not only planted in the landslide-affected areas, but around 7000 grams of them were also distributed to the road construction unit for use in slope stabilization works. Although Director Liu emphasized that restoration is a long process, he is confident that Taroko will have a new face after the earthquake.
